Mary Seacole The Making of the Myth is the first book to challenge the popular misconceptions that surround Mary Seacole’s iconic status as a “pioneer nurse” and battlefield heroine, intended, by some, to replace Florence Nightingale in those roles. McDonald masterfully disentangles reality from the myths, both those that exaggerate Seacole’s work and ignore or denigrate Nightingale’s. Drawing on the considerable primary sources available on both women, including letters and journal notes by officers, medical doctors and other observers during the Crimean War, as well as Seacole’s own memoir, McDonald debunks claims that Seacole was the real heroine of the Crimean War and a pioneer of healthcare. Her book supports the recognition of Seacole for her life and work, but not as the decorated battlefield heroine as she is typically portrayed today.

This book is a fascinating read which I would recommend without hesitation to devotees of both, or either, of Mary Seacole and Florence Nightingale. (I had already read every word of Mary Seacole’s engaging memoir, Wonderful Adventures, before coming to this recent Iguana production). The 248pp. book includes a 37pp. look at the Crimean War, brief accounts of MaryS over 45pp. and FlorenceN over 41pp., then a 52pp. examination of 10 myths, followed by 19pp. of passages from the Seacole book. In the important discussion of the issues arising from the contentious myths discussed, to me the book’s outstanding feature is the depth to which contemporary primary sources of supportive information are plumbed with such profound scholarship and erudition. For the book, Professor emerita Lynn McDonald draws authoritatively upon her unparalleled knowledge of Florence Nightingale as that admirable lady was in her times. The author’s capability derives from decades of her widespread researching of primary sources for editorial compiling into the massive 16 volumes collection of Nightingale’s extant writings, now completing her Collected Works. With such background, Prof. McDonald analyses 10 common myths of wishful thinking, half-baked notions masquerading as history, which she identifies as erroneously thrust into Mary Seacole’s reputation. And she supplies telling chapter and verse in innumerable quotations from writings of the times, for the unequivocal evidence endorsing the logic which she sets down.
The author is unstinting in her recognition of Mary Seacole’s fine achievements, with appropriate admiration and praise for them. Mary is certainly portrayed gallantly while in her full flamboyance. One of the sadder aspects to me however, was Mrs Seacole’s obvious misunderstanding regarding entitlement to the wearing of non-awarded war medals, which Lynn McDonald discusses fully and firmly, if gently. Mary Seacole certainly became a real celebrity in The Times, post-war. In an earlier age(mine) I would have said “She was a great gal!’.

Mary Seacole The Making of the Myth eBook Lynn McDonald Reviews
The real facts are that any account the bungling liar who wrote this Book above and their attempt to paint Mary Seacole as a fraud has failed since the people of that time who would have written about Mrs. Seacole would be void of credibility due to their beliefs at that time in slavery and that black people were void of human intelligence. I would ignore the rubbish that this so called professor have written to smear the reputation of Mary Seacole and to promote the history of exaggeration that surrounds the life of Florence Nightingale due to her being white woman. You have not succeeded in convincing me that Mary Seacole who the British have tried repeatedly to ignore and to bury her contribution as a nurse and caregiver during the Crimean War for decades is the "hangers on" you are portraying her to be. You are a liar and I am encouraging people not to read the rubbish you write but to do their own research for themselves. I can see a lot of white supremacist bungling in your writing style and intent. There are very lengthy articles at that time that verifies the true works that supports Mary Seacole's work and I'm suggesting that readers to search such articles before buying this book. This book will not tell you more than the information that is available to you for free.
